Indian trainees drive postgraduate growth in North America

Postgraduate programs in North America are continuing to acquire appeal amongst Indian students, with 2 new reports from Canada and the United States highlighting the appetite for college postgraduate qualifications and graduate study.

Stats Canada launched analysis revealing the development of college postgraduate programs given that 2014, mainly driven by global students. These programs usually need a postsecondary credential and usually focus on career-specific abilities.

By 2019, 67% of graduates from Canadian college postgraduate credential programs were global students, up from 30% in 2014. Over half of all graduates with these credentials were from India, up from 15% in 2014.

degree. “Indian trainees with lower post-graduation earnings might be more likely to remain in Canada, compared to lower-earning students from other countries”

“One possibility is that Indian students with lower post-graduation profits could be most likely to stay in Canada, compared to lower-earning trainees from other countries,” noted Katherine Wall, author of the report and expert at Statistics Canada.

Some 80% of all global students who completed a college postgraduate credential in 2015 got irreversible residency within five years of graduation– a greater rate than for international graduates of bachelor’s or master’s degrees.

Rates of transition to permanent residency within five years of graduation were greater for Indian worldwide trainees than those from other nations.

“Canada is relatively budget friendly for international students, and college post-graduate qualifications are less costly, frequently shorter and more quickly accessible than a university master’s degree,” stated Denise Amyot, president and CEO of Colleges and Institutes Canada. “The path to long-term residency for worldwide trainees is likewise a strong destination, and these programs can use points that assist in the Express Entry process.”

Canadian colleges and institutes “have a long history of engagement in India”, she continued.

Meanwhile a report from the Council of Graduate Schools in the United States found that the number of applications for master’s and certificate programs for autumn 2021 went beyond that of the prior record high in autumn 2018, with applications from Indian trainees leading the way.

Applications by Indian trainees increased by 36% in 2021, exceeding those from Chinese nationals for the first time in 5 years. The first-time enrolment of Indian nationals likewise increased by 430%.
